History of Esprit & the DSSAB

The District of Parry Sound Social Services Administration Board (DSSAB)

Established by the Province of Ontario, the District of Parry Sound Social Services Administration Board (DSSAB) is a special agency entrusted with delivering essential social services across the District of Parry Sound. In regions without municipal governments possessing the legal jurisdiction to act as service managers, DSSABs were created to ensure the provision of vital services to residents. 

The DSSAB's mandate encompasses a wide range of services, including Housing & Homelessness, Ontario Works, Children's Services, and Gender Based Violence programs. Through these programs, the DSSAB strives to enhance the well-being of individuals and families, fostering a healthier and more resilient community.

Esprit Place Family Resource Centre

In 1985, recognizing the need for specialized support for women and children in crisis, the DSSAB established Esprit Place Family Resource Centre. Located in Parry Sound, Esprit Place offers a safe haven for women and children fleeing violence or facing significant life challenges.

Over the years, Esprit Place has expanded its services to include emergency shelter, supportive counseling, legal advocacy, and outreach programs. These services are designed to empower individuals, helping them rebuild their lives and achieve long-term stability.

In March 2025, Esprit Place underwent significant renovations to enhance its facilities, ensuring compliance with current safety standards and creating a more open and communal living environment. These improvements aim to foster a sense of community and support among residents, aiding in their healing and recovery.
